Welcome, friend!

I am thirsty for the pursuit of clean water, eager to earn for elephants and sustainable village projects, and excited the share the magic of education with children!

My purpose is to inspire others to take action so that we can enhance communities through global give-backpacking!

What am I Doing?

I have chosen to partner with Global Volunteer Network and the Bamboo Project. In February of 2017, I will embark on a volunteer trip to two rural villages located in Thailand and Cambodia. Why this organization? Well, for starters Global Volunteer Network is a non-profit charitable trust that has been endrosed by the likes of United Nations Economic and Social Council AND The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Since 2002, they have placed 23,679 volunteers in over 69 countries.  This means that 3,551,786 volunteer hours (and counting!) and $2,457,493.94 has been raised.  I'm ready to contribute my part!

Why am I doing this?

I first became aware of the clean water crisis during the Water Ethics Conference held at Viterbo University while I was in graduate school.  According to the World Health Organization, 1 billion people lack access to safe drinking water. It started to get me thinking about what it means to be a global citizen. We have the power to help change that! I have volunteered with several organizatons for most of my life.  This time, I'm pairing my passion for travel with my passion to learn more while helping others.

Where am I heading?

In Cambodia, I'll do my part to work on a clean water project in a rural village outside of Siem Reap and learn about the challenges of living without such everyday luxuries. The 1980's ban on logging in Thailand has caused a conundrum for farming villages.  Here, whole villages strive to support and protect local elephants who consume upwards of 300kgs of food a day while trying to improve schools and builidings.  That's not easy on wages which equate to around $5 a day.  I'll be working and living in a village near Surin, Thailand to help build sustainable projects, support the farming community, and (bonus!) learn thai cooking, farming, and elephant caretaking with a host family.  I want to use what I can and learn as a global citizen how difficult economies can be. I'm ready to invest my time. I have the flexibility to do so, and with your help, we can make some magic happen in the world.

Why Do I need Your Help?

The funds on my fundraising page will be used to continue the facilitation and volunteer work of the nutrition, education, and sustainability projects in Cambodia and Thailand for Global Volunteer/Bamboo Projects. You will help play a part in the force for positive change in the world. Together, we can grow a community, give hope, and give childhood a chance! Also, donations are tax deductible.

Apart from hugs, high-fives, and sincere gratitude, I have another idea in mind. For those willing to donate $150 or more I will proudly be wearing my sponsor's name/organizations on t-shirts during my time in these villages.  As I roll up my sleeves and get dirty, these future friends can know that a lot of people around the world are thinking of them! For anyone willing to donate $500 or more I will happily cook you a thai dinner, bring home some personal messages, and share the difference you help me make over dinner upon my return! Can you imagine looking at photos of projects and letting me tell you, "You helped achieve this!"

Thank you in advance for you consideration. Through your kindness today, we can get there!

With Utmost Gratitude,

Brigid
