Hi all!

My name is Maja and I'm taking part in Global Volunteer Network's (GVN) 2014 Mt Everest Trek!

The purpose of this trek is to  raise funds to support children who are cared for by the Brighter Future Children's Home to help provide them with nutritional and educational needs. Not only that, but I will be trekking to Base Camp of the biggest mountain in the world! Neat huh?

The experience will be challenging, not just because of the physical strains from the trek, but also because I'm visually impaired. However, I'm such a determined person and this is really something I'm passionate about. I'm up for the challenge and I plan on conquering it!

Why Am I Doing This?

For those who do know me know I'm a huge advocate for doing our part in this world. Whether it be gender equity, poverty, or child care, whatever your cause is, there's someone out there who needs your help. We can all do our part by donating or volunteering to anything - trust me you're making a difference if you do, even if you don't see it. So, this is why I joined this trek, I want to help, to make a difference and I'm taking the plunge!

Back in 2005, I've been fortunate enough to take part in a humanitarian trip in Honduras with my best friend Abanti and now she's coming with me this time too! I'm SO excited to share this experience with her, I honestly can't think of anybody else I would want with me.

I'm extremely excited to get started and I hope if anything, I've inspired you to take part in a cause. But since you're here....help me get there! The process is fast, easy, and secure. I truly appreciate any support you can provide. It will benefit a great cause!

About Brighter Future Children's Home

Brighter Future Children's Home (BFCH) is a VSN owned and managed children’s home, located in the rural village of Bistachhap on the outskirts of the Kathmandu Valley. BFCH is VSN’s first children’s home and was established in March 2004. The BFCH kids are not necessarily orphans, but come from poor, broken or disadvantaged families. Most have only one parent (usually a mother) who is unable to look after them.

VSN is a Nepali non-profit, non-government organization (NGO) whose mission statement is to achieve empowerment and self-sufficiency within Nepali communities. “Helping Others to Help Themselves”

About the Trek

As a participant in this trek, we will be going from Kathmandu to Nepal’s high Himalayas. The pathways tread will take me from the foot of the world’s highest mountain, passing through Sherpa villages up to Base Camp Everest. First hand we’ll all get an insight into life in rural Nepal, its people and beautiful spirit. Most importantly, we get to meet the kids we donated the money for!

The trek is 18 days long, starting September 18 – October 5. We will have Sherpas as guides and I myself will have a personal guide to help me due to my visual impairment. We will be reaching an altitude of 5, 545 meters, less than 600 meters than the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro.

Raising the Money and Where Does it Go?

The mandatory amount to be fundraised to donate to Brighter Future Children’s Home is $2,000 USD. The remaining amount is for the GVN Program Cost (excluding air fare, equipment, etc.) Ideally I would like to cover all my costs but I'd rather start with raising money for the kids and what the organization is asking for. There is a deadline of August 1, 2014 so I’m eager to get the ball rolling since time is of the essence. Any help from you is a HUGE help for me :)

What’s in it for you?

For any donation given, I am forever grateful to you and please know that I appreciate your love and support.

For donations of $50 and above:

  • Your name on my t-shirt that I will be wearing during my trek in Nepal so that I can be reminded of your epicness

For donations of $100 and above:

  • Everything above PLUS a thank you and 'woo-hoo!' shoutout to you posted onto Youtube.
  • Your name on my Everest Flag - this flag I'll be taking to Base Camp with me to commemrate the completion of my journey and how I couldn't do it without my generous supporters (that's you!).  I'll take pictures with it and the kids too and send you a copy!

For donations of $300 and above:

  • Everything above PLUS you get to put a personal message on my flag
  • I will donate to YOU 10 hours of my time (because hey, if you help my cause I’d be happy to help yours).  That could include me doing your math homework for you!
    • I have a degree in Statistics, and I’m good at mental math, I’m good with Excel, I'm amazing at Google-ing and I make the best Turkish coffee in my family (just a few examples :o) )

How Else Can You Help?

Help me spread the word!!  Share my page (http://www.stayclassy.com/majaprojecteverest) on Twitter, Facebook, maybe send out an email to friends!  Even if you might have some ideas on fundraising or helping me out with my upcoming events, that would be epic!!
